The Impact Leaders Initiative was founded by Margaret Akullo to help current and aspiring leaders move from intention to execution and from potential to impact. Grounded in the belief that leadership is shaped from the inside out, the Initiative equips purpose-driven individuals with the mindset, clarity, structure, confidence and accountability needed to turn ideas into meaningful, high-quality outputs. Its central premise is simple: potential is not the same as impact. Having good ideas, ambition or expertise is only the starting point. Impact comes when people translate what they know, what they value and what they want to contribute into something tangible.
The Initiative grew from Margaret’s 35 years of professional experience across criminal justice, international development, leadership and institutional work in Europe, Africa and beyond, including more than 12 years with the United Nations. Across these environments, she repeatedly encountered talented and driven people whose potential was greater than they themselves could see. They had the intelligence, ideas and commitment, but often needed greater clarity, confidence, structure and accountability to turn intention into meaningful action.
At the heart of the Initiative is the Mindset to Output framework. It works from the inside out, beginning with reflection, self-awareness, purpose, values and clarity, before moving towards disciplined action and a tangible outcome. The output might be a professional document, presentation, position paper, portfolio, strategic plan, career decision or stronger professional profile.
The approach is practical rather than purely motivational. Participants work towards something concrete and leave with an output they can use, present or build upon. The mentorship programme provides a practical example. Participants enter with a specific objective or deliverable and are guided through reflection, analysis, development and accountability. The focus is not simply on giving advice, but on helping individuals understand what they bring, identify where they want to go and produce something that demonstrates their capability.
One mentee working in risk management and data analytics developed a professional portfolio that translated technical experience into visible evidence of capability. Another mentee, a criminologist, developed a position paper around an area of professional and academic interest and progressed towards presenting the work at a conference. Other participants have worked on CVs, LinkedIn profiles, professional positioning, presentations, speeches, strategic documents and career direction.
In each case, the output is a vehicle for deeper development. The objective is to strengthen professional identity, improve how individuals communicate their value and build the confidence to contribute more visibly.
The Initiative currently takes shape through three interconnected areas:
Mentorship: Structured support for emerging professionals and aspiring leaders, centred on defined outcomes. Depending on the individual, this can result in a stronger professional profile, portfolio, presentation, position paper, strategic document or clearer career direction.
Leadership Development: Participants explore purpose, values, professional identity, confidence, decision-making and communication, connecting internal leadership with external impact.
Writing and Knowledge Sharing: Writing is used as a tool for thinking, developing a professional voice and contributing to wider conversations. Through essays, leadership reflections and stories documenting mentee journeys, the Initiative explores how experience can become knowledge and contribution.
Looking ahead, the Impact Leaders Initiative is exploring how its work can develop beyond its current voluntary model into a sustainable and commercially relevant platform for partnership and collaboration. This includes opportunities to connect emerging African and diaspora leaders with organisations, institutions and businesses in Austria and Africa.
Potential areas include leadership development, professional talent, knowledge exchange, cross-cultural collaboration and diaspora engagement. The aim is to explore partnership models that create value for individuals while responding to the needs of organisations seeking talent, knowledge, networks and stronger connections with African markets and communities.
The ambition is not to create another generic leadership programme. It is to develop a distinctive platform that connects people, ideas and opportunities.
At its core, the Impact Leaders Initiative is about moving from intention to execution, from potential to contribution, and from contribution to impact.
